Getting to Salzburg

Fly into Munich

We recommend flying to Munich, then taking a train to Salzburg.

To get to the train - after customs, walk straight across the outdoor courtyard (past or through the Airbräu Biergarten) into the next building. Continue straight past the rental car desks until you see the Deutsche Bahn (DB) info desk (look for the big red “DB” sign).

You can buy tickets there or via the Deutsche Bahn app or website.

** Pro tip: If you have some time, head upstairs to the grocery store and grab a bottle of wine and some charcuterie fixings for the train!

Take a local train to Munich East (München Ost), then transfer to a train bound for Salzburg. The first leg is about 30 minutes, the second is around two hours.

Trains run frequently, so no need to stress about exact timing!

Alternate Routes

Major Airports: Vienna and Frankfurt

Local Airports: Salzburg and Innsbruck

By Train: There are also many trains coming and going to Salzburg from all parts of Europe.

Around town

In Salzburg, there is fantastic, clean and downright fun public transit that will get you where you need to go. Bus number 6 takes you from town to Opi's House. Get on the bus going in the direction of Parsch and then get off at the last stop called Salzburg Ludwig-Schmederer-Platz. You can buy tickets onboard, or go to any little shop labeled TABAK and purchase a pack of single-use or 24 hour tickets.

Uber (not Lyft) and Taxis are readily available. To call a Taxi, dial 8111 (https://www.taxi.at/). You can get to the wedding venue from downtown for ~15 Euros.

Where to stay

Room Block at NH Hotel Salzburg

Lodging can be expensive in Salzburg in August! We have arranged for a room block at NH Hotel Salzburg for a discounted rate of 218 euros a night which includes a very tasty breakfast spread each morning. This is a mid-tier hotel, centrally located right by one of the main walking streets and just a block away from our favorite restaurant, Pasta e Vino. You can book from the button below.

AirBnB, VRBO and Hotels

There are many accommodation options throughout Salzburg, but August is the high season for European travel so we recommend you book as soon as possible to enjoy the best rates and options. Below is a map that highlights the best places to stay in Salzburg.

No matter where you end up, public transportation in the area is fantastic and you will easily be able to get where you need to go.

Green: Core downtown, think cobblestone streets and cute cafes.

Red: Not recommended, near the train station and less nice.

We ❤ Schnitzel

Navigating an Austrian menu can be tough! Where did all of these letters come from? What's the difference between these meat and potatoes and those meat and potatoes? Here is our recommended list of confirmed very good food. Order any and all of these if you see them on the menu!

Soups & Salads

Kaspressknödelsuppe

Beef broth soup with a big cheesy bread dumping. The perfect starter for any Austrian meal.

Fritattensuppe

Beef broth soup with thin crepe strips.

Gemischter Salat

Translates to "Mixed Salad". Almost always available as a side or main. Some restaurants also serve it with a kasepressknodle on top as a main.

Mains

Schnitzel

The classic. Thinly pounded meat breaded and fried. Served with potatoes, lemon, and a preiselbeeren sauce. Generally pork "schwein" or veal "kalb".

Goulasch

Another Austrian Classic. A beef stew served either with a brotknodle (bread dumpling) or over spatzle (Austrian noodles). May also be listed as Rindsaftgoulasch.

Cordon Bleu

The same thing as Schnitzel, but has ham and cheese with the meat inside of the breading.

Zwiebelrostbraten

Steak with crispy onions on top with a delicious sauce, served over greenbeans.

Schweinebraten

A pork roast served with gravy, sauerkraut, and a brotknodle (a bread dumpling).

Bierfliesch

Beef chunks in a hearty sauce. Also served with a knodle or spatzle.

Veggie Mains

Käsespätzle AKA Kasnock'n

Basically Austrian mac'n'cheese, served with crispy onions on top.

Spinatknödel

A bread and spinach dumpling served in a butter sauce.

Eierschwammerl Goulash

Chanterelle mushrooms in a creamy sauce served with a bread dumpling.

Dessert

Apfelstrudel

Apple strudel, what dreams are made of. Would also recommend the lesser known strudel cousin: Topfenstrudel.

Kaiserschmarrn

A delicious scrambled pancake chopped up with raisins and powdered sugar, served with a plum sauce or applesauce.

Palatschinken

Austrian crepes filled with a variety of ingredients including nutella, apricot jam and ice cream.

Quick Tips

Reservations highly recommended for lunch and dinner! This is a busy time of year and, culturally, Austrians tend to make reservations when going out to eat.

If you don't have a resy - Unless a sign notes otherwise, seating in Austrian restaurants and cafes is DIY. If you see an open table, snag it - no need to wait for someone to seat you.

Tipping is optional, at a nice restaurant 10% is friendly and for smaller bills you can just round up. For example, if your bill is €13.50 you say €14 and they will type that into the card console or give you appropriate change for that number.

Cafes

Café Bazar

Our favorite place for morning coffee and breakfast. Sit outside along the river with views of the Festung and order the Bazar Klassisch for a traditional Austrian breakfast spread. If you are looking for something sweet, try their Topfenstrudel. Some of the best in the biz!

Cafe Tomaselli & Kiosk Tomaselli

If it's nice sit outside at the Kiosk Tomaselli. This spot is known for their cakes and their icecream. Dream come true! We love the tiramisu-torte and the himbeer-torte. And no visit to Tomaselli's is complete without an order of their homemade ribisel ice cream with whipped cream. Also...get a an Eiscafe, coffee with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream! You may want to bring a friend.

Out for a Drink

Café Bazar & Cafe Tomaselli

These two spots aren't just great for breakfast, they are also ideal for an evening drink sitting outside. We once famously spent six hours at Cafe Bazar and the waiters never batted an eye. At Tomaselli, if it's nice out, go to the outdoor Kiosk Tomaselli across the street.

Sporer

Enjoy standing on the Getreidegasse, the main walking street in town, homemade schnapps, a cocktail, or a glass of wine. Perfect for people watching.

Stiegl Sommer Lounge

Right across from the Festival Hall, sit outside with a drink and see everyone all dressed up for the Opera!

Bollicine Aperetivo e bar

Italian wine bar! If you're hungry, ask for an antipasta plate. Pro tip: the outdoors tables often say reserved but are not being used for a while. Ask the server what time they are reserved at, and you can sit down before that.

Restaurant Triangle

Cute spot with outdoor seating, right near the festival hall.

Restaurants

StadtAlm

Located up on the mountain overlooking the city, this may be the most scenic spot in town. Classic Austrian fare.

Wirsthaus Elefant

Located right in the middle of the oldtown. Classic Austrian Food, with arguably the best Kasnock'n in Salzburg.

Bärenwirt

Cozy cabin vibes with classic Austrian food. The Bierschaumsuppe (Beer Foam Soup) is a must for a starter and they are known for their Backhendl (Austrian fried chicken).

Gasthaus Hinterbrühl

Another Classic Austrian menu with outdoor seating. Hinterbruhl has arguably the best Schnitzel in Salzburg. Also has fantastic Zwiebelrostbraten.

Pasta e Vino

An all-time favorite and must every time we visit Salzburg. There is no menu, just an impatient waiter who will rattle off the daily offering of pasta and lasagna. Ask for the antipasti appetizer and they will whip up a fun platter of grilled and marinated veggies, cured meats and cheeses to kick things off.

Die Weisse

Outdoor beer garden seating, or huge classic brewery interior. They have the best Goulash in the city!

Goldene Kugel

Pretty touristy but worth it if you can sit outside. Classic Austrian menu, with standout Austrian ribs!

Gasthof Alter Fuchs

Outdoor back patio, tables on one of the main walking streets and a cozy inside. Classic Austrian menu.

Street Food

Balkan Grill Walter

This bosna stand is a Salzburg classic and beloved by locals and tourists alike! Two thin sausages in a tasty bread roll with curry powder, roasted onions and other toppings. We recommend ordering the Number 2!

Umut Kebab

The best kebab in town! We recommend you get a Durum Kebab with all the fixings. Durum is made with a thin tortilla-like wrap, Doner Kebabs are made on more of a bun.

Würstel Stands

The market on Universitätplatz always has 3-5 sausage carts ready to serve up Salzburg's finest. Order a Käsekrainer (sausage stuffed with cheese) and when you are offered fresh horseradish on the side, the answer is always YES.

Schrane Fried Chicken

Available only at the Thursday Farmers Market from 6 AM until noon. Get the potato salad on the side!

Activity Recommendations

A few of our favorite things to do around town!

Tour the Festung!

Though the von Clemm's are notoriously anti-Festung, Scott recommends going for the full tour. The inside is a big museum of Salzburg history and the tour ends atop the highest tower of the fortress.

Schloss Hellbrunn

A short bus ride from town, tour the famous "trick fountains". This is Anna's favorite tourist attraction in Salzburg!

Thursday Farmers Market

Every Thursday from 6 until noon, there is the biggest farmers market you have ever seen located in front of the Andräkirche Salzburg! We recommend getting fried chicken, fresh pesto and spreads and the Viererlei bread from the Itzlinger bakery.

Mirabell Garden

Visit the famous gardens of Schloss Mirabell, site of many famed scenes from the Sound of Music. Bonus points if you find the dwarf statue garden!

Museum der Moderne Salzburg

Hard to miss this museum perched high above the city! They bring in some of the best, and strangest, modern art exhibits. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon or soak up views of the city.

Enjoy Festival season!

Since 1920, the Salzburger Festspiele features the biggest names in opera. From July 18 - August 31 the town will be filled with music and opera lovers. See the festival goers all dressed up before the shows, or attend one yourself! For more information on performances and tickets, follow this link.

Outside of the city

Hike or Tram Up the Untersberg

This iconic mountain overlooks Salzburg and has a special place in the von Clemm heart. A bus from town will take you to the trailhead for a rigorous hike with hundreds (thousands??) of stairs winding their way to the top. You can also take the tram up and hike a short trail to the summit. The Zeppezauerhaus is a great spot for lunch on the way up!

Hike the Gaisberg

This mountain is directly behind Opi's Haus and a staple of Salzburg living. We have hiked it dozens of times and are always rewarded with amazing views (or at least a Stiegl beer) at the top.

Nearby Lakes

Several beautiful lakes are a short trip from town. Perfect for swimming and hanging out on a hot day. Our favorite spot is a public beach in the town of St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee.

Euro Travel Recommendations

Dolomites

Why we love it

Imagine taking the Grand Teton and copy/pasting that x 100. That's the Dolomites! Plus, this region has the perfect blend of Italian and Austrian culture. Where else do you see both schnitzel and spaghetti bolognese on every menu?

Towns

Cortina d Empezzo - Right at the base of some of the biggest mountains in the Dolomites. Cute, smallish town with good access to hikes.

Bolzano - A beautiful small city, great food and a fun, hip vibe.

Vipiteno - Small cute mountain town with beautiful walking street.

Alta Via I and II Hut to Hut

These multi-day hikes are famous for a reason.

We did the first ~ 60 miles of the Alta Via II and many day hikes along the Alta Via I and were blown away by the experience. Both of these treks constantly cross mountain roads, so you can do a section and then take public transportation into a main town.

If you want to start and end somewhere different, the trains all have lockers where you can store stuff, or you can stay at a hotel and have them hold your bags while you are out hiking.

Quick tip

There are huts everywhere. You will find a lot of online resources that point to a specific string of huts for different famous routes. This is a great starting point! You can then use Google Maps, Gaia GPS or Fatmaps to identify additional huts in the area. If one hut is booked or further/closer than you want - there is usually another hut available somewhere along the way.

Innsbruck, Austria

Why we love it

The younger, hipper cousin to Salzburg. Nestled right at the base of the Nordkette mountain range. Unlimited hiking and mountain biking opportunities straight from town! Don't miss the Goldenes Dachl!

Lake Annecy, France

Why we love it

Unlimited gelato, incredible bakeries and right on a pristine alpine lake!

Haute Route, Switzerland

Why we love it

Explore some of the biggest mountains in the Alps! Huts are strung together from Chamonix to Zermatt with plenty of options for as many nights and as long or short days as you'd like!
